The Day Itself — What the Invitation Tells You
Read this before anything else. It is a first interview, from nearly 400 applications, about your background and application rather than a technical exam — and each of those facts should change how you prepare.
Listen
0. Three facts in the email that reframe everything
1. The realistic shape of 25 minutes
How the time actually goes
2. The one thing to be remembered for
From roughly 400 applicants, the panel will discuss a shortlist afterwards in sentences. You want one of those sentences to be about you, and you want to choose which one.
3. Microsoft Teams, and the hour before
| Do this | Why |
|---|---|
| Install and test Teams by Monday, not Wednesday morning. Join a test meeting and check camera, microphone and speaker | Teams in a browser behaves differently from the app, and permission prompts appear at the worst moment. Use the desktop app if you can |
| Set your display name properly — *Rudrani Ghosh*, not an email handle or a device name | Four panellists will see it for 25 minutes. It is the only thing on screen you control completely |
| Check the time twice. 09:00 Amsterdam is 12:30 IST. Amsterdam is on summer time until late October, so the gap is 3.5 hours | Verify on the morning itself. This is the one error that is unrecoverable |
| Join two or three minutes early | You will be in a lobby. Being present when the chair admits you is better than arriving into a conversation already running |
| Light your face, not your back. Window or lamp in front of you. Camera at eye level — stack books under a laptop | A silhouetted candidate is harder to read, and on a four-person call the panel is reading faces for most of the 25 minutes |
| Close everything else. Notifications off, phone face down and silent, no other applications | A notification sound mid-answer is a small, entirely avoidable cost |
| Wired headphones with a microphone if you have them | Better audio than a laptop microphone and no risk of Bluetooth dropping mid-sentence. Audio quality matters more than video on a group call |
| Have a backup route — phone hotspot ready, and the dial-in or phone number if the invitation includes one | If your connection fails you want to be back in 60 seconds rather than emailing |
| One sheet of paper, not a document on screen | Reading from a second window is visible in your eyes. Paper beside the laptop is not. And keep it to one page — anything longer invites you to read it |
4. The last two minutes
5. If you remember eight things
- It is a first interview. The job is to be easy to advance, not to win the position on Wednesday. Leave hooks unopened on purpose.
- Nearly 400 applied and he called your profile exceptional. Credibility is established. The risk is giving them a reason to stop — overclaiming, monologuing, or arguing against the project's premise.
- The interview is your background and your application. Re-read your cover letter until you can discuss every sentence. That document is the syllabus.
- Six to eight questions in total. Ninety seconds each. A four-minute answer costs a panellist their only turn.
- Answer, then stop. Their follow-up tells you what they care about, and you cannot hear it while you are talking.
- Be remembered for one thing: police records measure reporting, not offending — and a cartel screen measures detection, not collusion. Same defect, and you already built the toolkit.
- 12:30 IST. Check it again Wednesday morning. Test Teams by Monday, light your face, one sheet of paper only.
- Prepare thoroughly, deliver conversationally. He said you need not prepare anything specific — so do not arrive sounding briefed.
